Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a natural system of medicine that has been practised in eastern countries for well over 2000 years. Although it is often recognised as a method of pain relief, it has been used across the world to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving an individual's overall well being, rather than just treating the symptoms of illness. According to Oriental philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians or pathways running throughout the body.
In any session of acupuncture I insert very fine needles into the meridians of energy, causing a stimulus and encouraging the body's own healing response, thus helping to restore its natural balance. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors, which I determine in each consultation and treatment session. My principal aim when providing acupuncture is to treat the whole person to recover the harmony between their physical, emotional and spiritual realms.
This is never more important than when trying to conceive and my fertility acupuncture treatments focus closely on this.
As a traditional acupuncturist, I'm sometimes asked what the difference is between my work and acupuncture given by doctors and physios. Here's a summary of some of the key differences:
Traditional Professional Acupuncture
- it takes 3 years of degree level training to qualify (approximately 3600 hrs)
- is a profession in its own right, not an adjunct to other therapies
- may be used for most conditions
- treats holistically - the emotions are as important as any physical problems
- addresses the causes of any problems as well as the symptoms
- is rooted in millenia of experience and knowledge - a complete system of medicine that's stood the test of time
Medical Acupuncture
- is learned over a very short time (around 80 hours)
- is used to suuplement another therapy (e.g. physiotherapy, osteopathy, medicine)
- effectively treats a narrow range of symptoms but doesn't address the causes
- focuses on the physical condition not the accompanying emotions (tackles the bad back, not the stress, depression or worry this causes)
Over the years I have had the pleasure of treating several doctors, physios, nurses and midwives for their fertility and pregnancy needs. Their decisions to seek traditional medicine for their own health are as varied as anyones, but the commitment to treatment that they make has always struck me as particularly illuminating.
